In San Antonio, 96,000 kids live below the poverty line.* With rising costs of basic goods like groceries and gasoline, families will be more vulnerable than ever to forgo buying coats. Ongoing exposure to cold weather conditions affects health and academic performance**, lowering the opportunities for success for children throughout our community.

S.M.A.R.T., San Antonio District 5 Council Representative Terri Castillo, fpo marketing and our local partners are putting a face on the need for warm coats, raising awareness by collecting coats to create a child’s portrait using mixed media and the collected coats. All coats will be donated to those in need. S.M.A.R.T. will also act as a clearing house for other organizations’ coat drives and coat distribution.

But we can’t do it without you.

You are invited to join with neighbors, local businesses, organizations, and artists by donating new and lightly used coats to keep kids warm during the cold winter months.

NARRATIVE CANVAS
Donated coats will be used to construct a portrait of a child. The portrait will be a composite of San Antonio children of all ethnic backgrounds. Click for the project timeline.

Artist Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada is recognized internationally for creating large-scale work in urban spaces; some of his “canvases” are so large that they can be seen from space and photographed by satellites.

Gerada has collaborated with multiple organizations and institutions, such as Google Research Lab, The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Group, to work to forward positive initiatives and projects. Go ahead and lead a coat drive in your neighborhood, community organization, or business.

Please let us know if you would like to make your business, church, or community center a drop-off site. We will include your initiative on our locations page and coordinate pickup for the portrait and distribution to local children. Together we can make a difference.
